This piece is a very large section of wood carved. I don't know the type of wood.. 24 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 30 inches tall. I believe it is from Indonesia, or around that area. It was brought home from a teacher who taught in that area for years as part of his collection. The carvings are of animals (Elephants/Monkey/Birds) and Plants/Trees/Vines. It is very heavy and has some pieces that have come off, but i have all the ones I can find. The detail is beautiful. Let me know what else you might need. Thanks so much! .
My brother in Law bought a house from a man who was an international teacher. He taught around Bali/Indonesia mainly. He brought home many pieces that he lived with for years until he had to downsize and move into an apartment. He didn't have room for all the pieces. I bought a couple and my brother in law was given this when he bought the mans home. It's not his style so he gave it to me. I don't know the timeframe, but the gentleman is elderly now and he came here to retire from teaching.
Dear Buffy,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a wood carving made out of tropical wood with measurements of 30 x 24 x 19 inches. The carving depicts a tropical forest with elephants, monkeys, and birds. Such carvings are typical for Indonesia especially the island of Bali. Since the middle of the 20th century, many small workshops produce numerous wood carvings with different motifs for export or as a souvenir for tourists.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
