What does this mean?

Hello,
Your item is an intricately engraved double-barrel percussion-cap fowling piece by John Wiggan, dating from the early to mid-19th century. This type of firearm was primarily used for hunting birds (hence the term “fowling piece”) and was a precursor to the modern shotgun. The firearm features delicate engravings, platinum baffles, and original accoutrements, such as a handmade wooden case, copper powder horn, leather shot pouch, and various tools, all of which significantly enhance its desirability. The presence of the engraved name “John Wiggan” — twice — as well as the mention of royal service, indicates this was a bespoke piece by a respected English gunsmith, likely active in the first half of the 19th century, possibly in the 1830s–1850s.

Historically, John Wiggan was known to be one of the reputable British gunsmiths of his time, and pieces bearing his signature were custom-made for aristocratic or upper-class clientele. The percussion-cap mechanism, replacing the flintlock, came into use in the early 19th century and represents a significant technological advancement in firearm design. The reference to platinum baffles is notable; this feature was used to reinforce areas of high pressure within the barrel, suggesting both high craftsmanship and concern for performance and safety.

Given the complete set with original accoutrements, the fine condition of the gun itself, the provenance, and the historically significant association with the royal family, this firearm is an exceptional collector’s piece. The market for such antique arms remains strong, particularly for examples with documented makers and accompanying accessories.
