Dear Ted,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Can you give me any more information about where you found this piece?
Thank you,
Leah
This is a 山水 ‘shan shui’ (in English, “mountain water “) painting with a Chinese poem. The piece is ink on silk and depicts a scholar walking across a bridge near a small home. Paintings like these are often done in imitation of early works. This piece was probably made in the 19th or early 20th century. The brocade edging shows some age, but this does not detract from the value of the piece.
The artist’s signature above the red seal does not match a known artist. The red seals may indicate a later owner or a seal of the artist. It’s a well-balanced composition and the painting style is refined and consistent.
Based on sales of similar items at auction, the Fair Market Value of this piece is between $200 and $300.
Dad used to deal antiques when he was in Korea. He kept few items around for over 50 years.
