Unsigned …. very good condition (a little dirty from human hands), no attempt at cleaning it….no known cracks/breaks/repairs... age unknown… I believe white marble on attached marble socle. At first glance could possibly be Zeus/ Jupiter/Poseidon/Plato (?) etc. To me the wave of the hair imitates being under water. Although, by the sadness of his face (life), I was half-hoping it was a lost Henry Wadsworth Longfellow attributed to Edmonia Lewis ~ but I think that’s just wishful thinking. Acquired from a large estate in Jupiter, Florida.
LARGE: 32”H x 18”W X 16”D and easily 200+ pounds.
Hello, this item is a monumental white marble bust depicting a bearded male figure, unsigned and of uncertain date or authorship. Carved with considerable skill, the expressive face, downcast gaze, and flowing hair suggest a figure of classical inspiration, potentially evoking mythological figures such as Zeus, Poseidon, or a philosopher like Socrates or Plato. The wave-like motion of the hair and the highly emotive facial expression suggest the hand of a sculptor familiar with late Neoclassical or Romantic styles, though no specific attribution is currently possible. The work stands approximately 32 inches tall and weighs over 200 pounds, mounted on a marble socle.
In terms of market value, the absence of a signature or documentation limits the attribution and thus the ceiling for valuation, though the scale and quality still command attention.
Thank you
