What does this mean?

Hi Ellen

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Leroy Neiman (1921–2012) was one of America’s most famous 20th-century artists, celebrated for his vivid use of color and energetic, impressionistic style. His work focuses on motion, glamour, and athleticism, capturing the drama and spectacle of sports — boxing, golf, racing, the Olympics, and more. He was the official artist for the Olympics several times and a regular contributor to Playboy magazine starting in the 1950s.

Horse racing was one of Neiman’s recurring subjects. His jockey prints are typically vibrant, kinetic, and filled with brushstroke energy, emphasizing movement and excitement over strict realism. Common titles or themes include: “Jockeys Up”, “Belmont Stakes”, “At the Track”, “The Paddock” and “Winner’s Circle”.

The image is commonly cited as Bill Hartack (or Bill Hartack — Jockey) and dates from around 1970. Like most on the market, this appears to be a color lithographs / photo-lithographs or serigraphs produced as signed, limited editions; 200 was the usual edition for this print. One of the signatures was one that was done in the plate; the other is a graphite one signed after the print was made. This is not atypical, most should have both.

When offered at auction, this print usually sells for $125-175 at auction, and retails from $250-350.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
