Lost wax holocaust memorial bronze - large set of 3 - item 1
22 May 2025
Description

We do not know the artist, each bronze has an identical mark we have been unable to identify. They are very large and heavy, lost wax, apparently holocaust memorial. These were inherited from my father the only story I have is that the dealer that sold them to him said that came from a very elderly mans estate as he was going into assisted living and the story the old man told the antique dealer is that he found these bronzes buried in hay in an old barn on a property he purchased in upstate New York sometime late fifties early sixty's and that is all we know. What does this mean?

Hi Josh,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

This - and the other bronze figures you've submitted for appraisal - are haunting images that suggest the influence of Salvador Dali (1904-1989); there is also an argument that these were made by an artist working in the Brutalist aesthetic, which is characterized by a raw, unrefined, and often stark visual style that emphasizes material honesty, structural clarity, and a kind of bold minimalism.

In sculptures such as this, the identity of the artist can make a lot of difference in the value; I'm not drawing any immediate attributions to the name of the maker but have valued this based on its similarities to other unattributed Brutalist bronze figures of comparable height and grouping.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

Brutalist or Surrealist School, mid 20th Century
Untitled (Mother and Child)
bronze
approximately 9 inches tall, on an irregular asymmetrical rounded base, unsigned
CONDITION: This appears to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: Inherited; by repute, was discovered in a hay barn in upstate NY, possibly done as or for a Holocaust Memorial.
$ 600-900*
