This is an antique, mid 19th century, Victorian era 'Canterbury'. A canterbury is slatted, open top, low stand on short caster feet with a drawer. They were originally designed for holding sheet music, though are often referred to as magazine stands. These were first produced in the 1780s for the Bishop of Canterbury, hence the name, and by the 1860's these were considered a status symbol in homes of the wealthy, especially in America. This one is done in French Louis style with carved and gilded arched wood slats, black lacquered surface, which is the influence of post 1851 Japonisme, and it is tole painted by hand. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
Hey Nora,
I just downloaded more images of the magazine rack for your review.
Thank you Nora!
You are very welcome.
Please add a photo of a corner of the drawer to show the joinery and an image of the underside of this too.
