13. Mid-Twentieth Century Japanese Bamboo Veneer Sideboard. My wife’s grandparents purchased this when stationed in Japan in the mid-1950’s. Condition is fair with the bamboo veneer. Structurally, the cabinet is sound. Several bamboo veneer pieces have been lost on the sides as photos show. Ornate scalloped inlay designs throughout. Measures: 36”w x 18”d x 45-1/2”h.

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be what you suggested, a mid 20th century japanese cabinet, with several drawers, two doors and the possibility to flip open the top. It is a well designed piece of furniture and decoratively carved on the front. The breaking of the veneer on the sides might have been a result of central heating. I have encountered such damages repeatedly on japanese furniture. To have the damage repaired will cost more than the actual value if sold at auction. To cover it up with wood of similar colour might be a solution. The estimate is based on similar japanese cabinets in good condition actually sold at auction. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the item.
