What does this mean?

Hello Gioia,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry and for the new images.

This is a Netsuke & Ojime, from circa late 19th century - early 20th century based on style and material. It is also presumably made out of ivory, as this is the material often used for these objects. An ojime (緒締め, is a bead used in Japanese inrō (carrying cases). Each is carved into a particular shape and image, similar to the netsuke, though smaller. It is used to fasten the cord of the inrō so that it does not unstack while carried.

According to the translation of the Japanese word (ne = root, tsuke = hang), it is assumed that simple found objects such as misshapen pieces of root wood were used.

Good condition.
