What does this mean?

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Noritake was one of the most popular names for dinnerware in the mid 20th Century; not only was it handsome and serviceable but it was also comparatively affordable. Increasingly few people today, however, entertain in such a formal way and the market is saturated with services of varying sizes, colors, etc. Because there is less demand than supply, fair-market / auction prices for Noritake remain low, typically bringing $4-8 PER PIECE.

This would have originally been a dessert service and would have come with a larger cake plate (sort of like a platter), a small number of plates and tea or coffee cups with matching number of saucers. When such small sets of just tea pot, cream pitcher and sugar bowl (occasionally with a waste bowl for used tea leaves) come to market, they typically bring nominal prices; a survey of recent auction results for Noritake show most sell for less than $100 and usually less than $50 for the set. This is a dramatic reduction from more than 20 years ago, when such small sets could reliably sell for $200 or more, suggesting a diminishing audience for these....it would be rare for anyone younger than 70 to gather for tea these days; meeting up at Starbucks for coffee in paper cups is much more the norm!

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage Noritake parcel gilt three-piece tea set

sugar bowl (5 inches tall, 8 inches width across handles
Cream pitcher (3-1/2 inches tall, 6 inches length across spout and handle)
CONDITION: Client represents these are in perfect condition; value assumes no chips, breaks, repairs or losses.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 40-60 for the set*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
