This is an antique, 19th century, Victorian era, about 1890's, blonde wood rocking chair with all turned wood stretcher, stiles and rail pieces, a thick shaped plank wood seat and a fretwork carved back that is done in a birds-eye maple veneer. The body is likely done in maple as well, though it could also be a fruitwood such as pear. The provenance is that the rocker originated in Norway and has been in the possession of a Norwegian family for 3-4 generations. The Victorian furniture market is currently slumped. Pieces, even the original period pieces, do not sell for what they used to sell for a few decades ago. The market was further impacted by the Recession.
The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
