Oil on canvas, signed lower right corner dated 1911 and signed by Hall. The panel is in good condition, but due to its age, it has small cracks
44x62
Hello Amir,
Thank you very much for submitting your item for an appraisal.
The presented object appears to be an oil on canvas painting depicting a thin old man, bent over a table, counting coins by meager candlelight. Below the table is an empty chest and the man is naked from the waist. The canvas measures 44 x 62 cm. and, based on the images provided, seems to be in good condition with only minor signs of aging.
The painting is signed "Hall" and dated 1911, but we can find no records of a known artist active at this time with that name that would have likely created this composition. An inscription on the verso "Gerighet" translates to "greed" or "avarice" in Swedish, which gives us some indication of the origin of this piece. It would have likely been part of a larger series illustrating the 7 deadly vices: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth.
I would estimate the current fair market value at $200 to 300 USD, though retail and asking prices may vary.
Thank you very much and I wish you all the best for this holiday season!
Kind regards,
Anne
