In excellent condition. Oil still life painting with signature.
14"x16"
Dear Alison Ross,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is a Continental School Still Life oil painting on canvas. It depicts a golden vase with a large bouquet of flowers spilling out of the sides. The work was created by Theodore Van Cina (Dutch-American, 1865 - 1940). It is signed "Theo van Cina" in the lower right corner. The painting measures 14 x 16 inches in frame. From the images provided, the work appears to be in Fair condition. There is warping to the canvas, visible marks, and a possible tear to the upper left edge. Further UV light inspection will likely reveal craquelure and inpainting.
Theodore van Cina was a Dutch-born artist who relocated to New York. Some documentation also alludes to travels to Chicago and Los Angeles. There are quite a few works by van Cina on the market, but little biographical information is known. Looking at auction records, a few paintings by the artist have sold above $1000, however those works depicted city and maritime scenes. These sales also occurred in the early 2010s, and trends suggest that value of his paintings have dropped. Many paintings have passed at auction, and others selling under $500. With these records, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this painting between $200 and $500.
Thanks again for your submission.
Kind regards,
Charlotte B.
