Dear Glen,
I wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a Smith & Wesson Mod. 3 revolver with a 44 cal.
The serial number 27738 indicates it was probably made in the 1890s. The revolver is chambered in the .44 Russian which was the standard .44 S&W caliber from the 1870’s to early 1900’s.
This Smith & Wesson revolver with slight variations and was truly one of the most popular big Smith & Wesson’s on the Western Frontier. The revolver features a top-break single action design with six shot rotating cylinder having an ejector mechanism.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in bad to medium condition and no severe damage is visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 800 to 1600 USD.
This estimate is based on recent recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Gregory
Dear Glen,
Thank you for your message.
You are right it is tendentially more medium than bad. Bad to medium means that there are damages or scratches that cut the surface deeply.
I recommend not to clean it. Ask a weapon store for their tips for cleaning such an old piece and which weapon oil you could use.
With kind regards,
Gregory
Thanks Gregory, what about cleaning the bore and cylinders only? Also, do you know the percentage the action house takes?
Dear Glen,
thank you for your email. The fees or percentages differ from auction house to auction house. I think it would be no problem to clean these inner parts of the gun.
With kind regards,
Gregory
Hi Gregory, I was wondering why you consider it to be in bad to fair condition? Outside of the sheared screw I thought it was in pretty good/great condition relative to its age. Would cleaning it help? I've always heard cleaning hurts the value
