Dear John,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the apprisal.
The presented object appears to be a Patriarchs Militant (Uniformed Ranks of the IOOF) society or lodge sword. It comes with the scabbard and is identifiable because of the globe-shaped pommel and the motto "Pax aut Bellum" (Peace or War) which are usually found etched on the sword blade. The Patriarchs Militant fraternal order was first established in the United States circa 1841 and continues to this day. They are a branch of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) and considered Uniformed Ranks.
This piece was made out of steel, brass, fabric, and wood. Such ceremonial swords were used as signs of membership in Masonic and similar orders, indicated the rank of the member, and are nowadays still often on the market especially in The United States. This piece was probably made in the late 19th century or early 20th century.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
