Hand carved scroll arm chair appears to be reupholstered and painted. It looks like a British Colonial plantation chair or replica. I do not know what type of wood it is made of. The nails are primitive and not round. There was damage to one of the legs and it was fixed with new screws/nails. The primitive ones are hard to see and take close inspection.
I bought this from an estate sale in San Diego and do not have any information on it.
Hi Krista,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I don't recognize the wood either as its heavily stained but it's a hardwood, that's for certain. This pair has some age (first half 20th Century) but is not as old as these might have been (as early as early 19th century).
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A pair of British Colonial style hardwood and pony-upholstered plantation armchairs
first half 20th Century
each with turned crest, arms with scrolled ends over scrolled arm supports, and front legs joined by a stretcher.
Overall height 39 1/2 inches; width 24 1/4 inches; depth 27 inches
CONDITION: refinished and reupholstered
PROVENANCE: purchased from a San Diego estate sale
$600-900 for the pair ($300-450/each)*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you for using Mearto.
Overall depth is 27” which I forgot to include in the previous message.
