United artists movies umbrella
36"
Hi Geoffrey,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The movie studio United Artists was founded in 1919 by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and DW Griffith to give filmmakers greater control over productoin, distribution and profits. Rather than functioning initially as a conventional studio, it distributed independently produced films. It became associated with influential filmmakers and major films, including the James Bond and Rocky series. After decades of ownership changes, MGM acquired United Artists in 1981; the brand was revived and subsequently used under various corporate owners.
This umbrella promotes seven UA films: The Champ (1979); James Bond 007's Moonraker (1979); Rocky II (1979); Voices (1979); Richard Lester's Cuba (1979); Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979); and Hair (1979). Because all of these movies were released in 1979, I'm presuming that this umbrella was made around then.
You don't include in your photos any maker's mark and I can't find out how many of these were made but other advertising and promotional umbrellas that have sold at auction before have brought prices ranging from $50 to $500. For the purposes of this appraisal, I would expect this umbrella to bring between $150 and $250 if sold in a collectibles and advertising auction.
If you're looking to sell this, I would price it at $400, which is high enough to avoid underselling this and which can be lowered if you don't get anyone interested at that level.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
