Procured in Saigon in 1962/1963. Showed to Vietnamese person who stated the signature was in "old Viet" and that they couldn't read who the artist was. Not sure of medium but not chalk. Looks like oil on paper. Looking to validate that statement and to get appraisal to see if it is worth framing. thanks Mike
sent back from Saigon Viet Nam in 1962/1963. Dad was there prior to war working. Lived in Caravel hotel downtown and story was this was street artist out front and sometimes in lobby sat and painted. Only a couple of dollars at the time.
Dear Michael,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a mid-sized painting made in oil or acrylic paint on canvas or cardboard with unknown measurements. The painting depicts a landscape with a bay, fishermen, and ships. The artwork is localized Cap St. Jaques and was made in Vietnam by an unknown artist for decorative purposes. Such painting with this characteristic colorful, fast and effectual manner to paint are still produced in high numbers as souvenirs and for export into the Western countries.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 30 to 60 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
