I purchased this drawing, from a person, who did not know Francois Boucher, as the seller thought it was a reproduction of an etching by J Boucher. The seller found that drawing, which was left behind in the house they bought in Melbourne. As an art teacher in Europe, before relocating to Australia, some years ago and having done some model drawing , etching and painting during those years, I am pretty sure it is a sanguine drawing and not a print. Recently local appraisers also verified it as a genuine drawing. Searching Francois Boucher's work for several weeks now, I cannot find this image anywhere in his catalogues of work anywhere and therefore, I would like to know, if this drawing has been handed down over the years without any sale records. There is a mirror image in existance as a Print/Etching by Boucher indicated as: du cabinet de madame D’Azaincourt, NO. 92. (Image attached) Because of this, I would like to know, if this work could be a pre study for this print, as the image is identical, but mirrored. If genuine, I would like to sell this art work. I also have found online a ‘Boucher' image of two women heads from behind on one drawing, of which one female has an identical hair treatment as the woman on my image, which could indicate, that these two women where the same person and perhaps in the same sitting. The image in question looks old and shows some light mould markings. I have opened the frame and took images of this drawing as I found them. I also would like to get an approximate value for this work.A few days ago, I ordered a true scale image of the etching print which is from Lyon, France. I copied this image in true scale on a transparent sheet. I also copied my drawing in true scale on a transparent sheet. After putting the two images on top of each other, one in mirror form, the shapes show an exact match, telling me, that these images ( Lyon print and my drawing) are related. Further I have attached some highlighted text from wikipedia, indicating, that Madame de Pompadour, ordered prints made from drawings given to her by Francois Boucher, to create her ‘Cabinet de Madame D’Azaincourt’. See below. Hope this may assist with your assessment.
