76" x 54", wool, little used since I inherited in 1980, probably purchased in 1960s. I once had receipt from Marshall Fields Co., Chicago but cannot find it now.
Owned by aunt who purchased it at Marshall Field's but I no longer have the receipt.
Dear Roxanne,
Thank you once again for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Your rug is a Scandinavian Rya and dates from the mid 20th century. Rya rugs are a traditional Scandinavian style wool rug with a pile measuring from 1-3 inches. They are hand-knotted with a Ghiordes style knot. This knotting technique takes a colored weft and passes it over two pieces of warp, then it is pulled through, and the excess pile cut. Traditionally Rya's were used as bedcoverings for protection against the harsh winter climates and were made out fur. In the 1970s, with the rise of Mid Century Modern Swedish furniture, rugs of this style rose in popularity. Your rug has a definite MCM aesthetic with the colors and overall design. Based on recent price realizations for rugs similar to yours, a fair market estimate would be between 400 and 800 US dollars.
Best Regards,
Morgan
