This icon (in its kiot) is about 13" x 12". The silverwork was done is Moscow in the late 19th century from what I can tell. The gold colored frame is painted wood.
This icon was a gift to my grandparents when they were married in 1930. Based on the city mark it seems like the silver (and I am guessing the icon itself) was made in Moscow in the late 19th century. My grandparents were married in New York City in 1930, so I am assuming the icon was purchased locally at the time of the wedding. It is certainly ornate enough to be a wedding gift. I don't know what type of wood the case (kiot) is made from. The gold colored frame on the inside feels very light - it's also wood but I can't tell what type. I found markings on the icon itself - in the halo around Christ and on the side. I didn't find anything on the kiot - inside or out - to give insights there.
Dear Vic,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay of the apprisal.
The presented object appears to be a hand-painted icon of Jesus Christ with a silver oklad or riza. This piece was probably made in the late 19th or 20th century. The oklad is hallmarked with the Russian silver stamp the zolotnik and a maker mark "A.K.". Sadly this maker or silversmith hallmark is known but not identified yet.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 600 to 1.200 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
