She is an S&H 1250 model. It is stamped on the back of her head along with DEP Germany 8. About 19” tall. The head is in great shape. There are no visible cracks or chips. She has pierced ears, grayish eyes and coral colored lips. There is a lot of detail in the painted eyebrows and eyelashes. I believe she has a leather and fabric body. The hair is a dark blonde with curly hair. She has a yellow dress. She is missing her left thumb. We found her with the following hand written note (the paper had turned yellow it was so old) “Leoma Consuelo Lee Jan 6 1898. Received doll Xmas 1903 when 5 years old. Redressed August 1971”.
We bought it at a Goodwill thrift store in a display some case. She is held up my a dowel. Please see previous page about the note I found under her dress.
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
It is a beautiful doll. Such antique toys are being offered at auction on a regular basis.
The doll was made by the German doll factory Simon & Halbig in ca. 1898, they continued to make this particular number/model for ca. 10-15 years.
When appraising dolls it is very important that they are in good condition and without any chips, cracks or hairlines. You state that this is the fact that it is in good condition and with the original wig as well. The body is leather and filled with a kind of sawdust. The clothes are unfortunately of a newer date - possibly from the 1970s as you write. The original clothes would have added to the value.
I believe that it due to its good condition would attract the attention of both collectors and dealers if it came up for auction.
The estimate provided is for a well-advertised specialised online antique toys auction, where I believe the doll has the best chance of realising its fullest potential. However, there is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to the Simon & Halbig. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I’m happy to help.
