What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a hand-crafted anthropomorphic terracotta vessel, most likely associated with the Shipibo-Conibo pottery tradition of the Peruvian Amazon, provisionally dating to the 20th century. First, please accept my apologies for the earlier appraisal, which was mistakenly written for a different object. Having reviewed your photographs and the correct measurements, your vessel stands approximately 24 cm high and 20 cm wide, weighing 827 grams. It features a distinctive anthropomorphic composition, with a rounded body surmounted by a sculpted human head forming the open neck. The facial features include prominent eyes, a projecting nose, modeled lips, and painted vertical bands suggesting hair or facial ornamentation. The body displays geometric diamond-shaped panels, linear patterns, and dotted motifs executed in dark brown pigments against the natural reddish clay. Small projecting elements on either side suggest arms, while additional raised details and areas of green surface decoration contribute to its unusual appearance. The combination of anthropomorphic modeling and geometric ornamentation is particularly reminiscent of traditional Shipibo-Conibo ceramics produced in the Ucayali region of Peru. However, this attribution remains provisional without documented provenance or direct examination.

The vessel appears to be in reasonably good overall condition, with surface abrasions, minor firing irregularities, pigment wear, and localized discoloration consistent with handling and age. The photographs do not reveal significant structural damage, although the rim and projecting elements should be examined for minor losses or restoration. The green decorative areas and overall finish deserve particular attention when establishing its age and manufacturing technique. Although its appearance references longstanding Indigenous ceramic traditions, there is insufficient evidence to classify it as a genuinely pre-Columbian archaeological artifact. A 20th-century attribution is more appropriate based on the available information. Comparable Shipibo-Conibo anthropomorphic terracotta vessels have appeared at European auctions, including examples sold in 2024 for approximately £60 to £130. Considering your vessel’s dimensions, decorative complexity, apparent condition, and absence of documented provenance, I would recommend the following conservative valuation within the international ethnographic and decorative arts market.
