Made of Cherry, approx. 32 " in length, approx 27" heigh. Lock on upper chest and lower drawer. Squat Sheraton style feet. Comes apart in 2 pieces. There is a ghost of the partition in the center of the chest. Original finish. I have both knobs for drawer.
Purchased from an estate sale in Nashville, Tn along with another cherry chest and Plantation desk of same era. May have been from original old home that sat on property, called Maplecrest.
This is an antique, 2nd quarter of the 19th century, about 1835 - 1850, Southern American, Tennessee origin, sugar stand or sugar chest in cherry wood that bears the pentimeno, or shadow of, a partition in the upper chest on lathe turned legs. These chests were a show of prominence and wealth. Theyheld not only sugar in cone form but alcohol, spices and other sundries which were kept under lock and key. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
