Curved blade, ornate handle, hoop, balled cord
35" x 1"
Unknown. This was given to me in 1963 by elderly neighbor
Dear Ricky,
Thank you for your help and patience.
The presented object appears to be a Japanese Kyu-Gunto sword. This sword which means "old pattern military sword" was a mixture of Western and Japanese sword tradition and was used between 1875 to 1934 for the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy. The flower on the handle depicts the coat of arms of the Japanese Tenno a chrysanthemum flower.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 250 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George
