Description

This is a sculpture I bought locally that looks like a version of “ The Scream” painting. The woman who sold it didn’t know its provenance but thought it was resin. It’s mounted to the base, is 11 inches tall ( not counting the base) and about 11 inches deep and weighs 17 pounds. Both the sculpture and the base are marked “ VAN VRAKEN”

What does this mean?

Hello, your item is a sculpture resembling “The Scream,” possibly inspired by Edvard Munch’s iconic painting. The piece is marked “Van Vraken,” a name not widely recognized in major art circles but potentially indicative of a contemporary or local artist. Given the description and weight, the material appears to be resin, as mentioned, though further testing would confirm this.

Historical Context:

Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” is one of the most famous works of modern art, inspiring numerous reinterpretations and replicas across various mediums. This sculpture captures the essence of existential despair reflected in the original painting, making it appealing to collectors of modern art-inspired objects.

Market Analysis:

Such works typically appeal to niche collectors interested in Munch’s influence on contemporary art. The provenance is unclear, and the name “Van Vraken” does not correspond to a well-documented artist, which affects its valuation. However, the quality of execution and its connection to “The Scream” could attract interest in art auctions or local galleries.

Estimated Value:

Considering its dimensions, weight, and material (resin), the sculpture could fetch $200–$400 USD in a retail or gallery setting. At auction, it might sell for $150–$300 USD, depending on the buyer’s interest.
