Description

It is in good condition. There is some rust on it from being improperly stored but from my understanding that is not hard to remove. Caliber .38-40. Belonged at one point to the first sheriff of Fresno county California.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a Winchester Model 1873 lever-action rifle with serial number 285449, manufactured in 1888 according to factory records from the Cody Firearms Museum. It is chambered in .38-40, features an octagonal barrel, and a plain trigger configuration. The Model 1873 is one of the most iconic rifles in American firearms history, often dubbed “The Gun that Won the West.” Known for its reliability and widespread use, it played a central role in frontier life. This particular example includes documented provenance from the Cody Museum, which adds credibility and historical context to its value.

The firearm shows signs of oxidation due to improper storage, but the user notes it remains in overall good condition. If the rust is surface-level and can be professionally cleaned without pitting or compromising mechanical integrity, the rifle could fetch between 2,500 and 4,000 USD, particularly due to its confirmed production date and relatively uncommon .38-40 caliber.
