Hi Peter,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An Arts & Crafts style paneled hardwood secretary cabinet
Possibly made in Australia, circa 1920s
One side fitted with a desk with fall-front and divided interior over paneled cabinets, the other side with a tall glazed (glass) and paneled cabinet door, all on short bracket feet.
179 cm high by 116 cm wide by 36 cm deep
PROVENANCE:
AUD: $800-1,200*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Thanks for the dimensions, Peter; I've amended the appraisal to include them.
Your question is a good one that I get asked all the time and am happy to answer. Simply put, the popular furniture styles these days still lean towards the mid-Century modern look with its very clean lines and minimalist appeal. That said, the Arts & Crafts period is somewhat akin to that and there is crossover appeal but antique furniture is still fairly soft in the current auction market. Of course, there is always a chance that if you offered this at auction, it could appeal to two or more people who were really keen to have it and would drive the price upward but that is increasingly less common these days so I felt it better to be realistic rather than idealistic about the state of the market.
Please let me know if you have other questions!
Delia
Thanks for your reply Delia.
That makes complete sense, really appreciate you taking the time to get back to me. Fingers crossed a couple people love it :)
Peter
My pleasure - good luck!
Thanks Delia
Apologies forgot to add the measurements they are:
179 h x 116 w x 36 d cm
(lower height is 157cm)
Is it please possible to get some more information on why that market value was given. We thought it would be worth more given its age, condition and make. Thank you!
