This has been in the family that I know of 50 plus years. It is believed to have belonged to the Cheeney family of Manchester Ct. The Cheeneys own and operated woven mills in Manchester in the 1800s rather it was made by them or a family member is unknown. My wife's Great Grandmother worked for one of the Cheeneys as domestic help it was given to her by the family she worked for. The Tapestry is very detailed in the material used. and in pretty good condition.
The Tapestry was owned by the Cheeney Family of Manchester Connecticut. My wife's Great Grandmother worked for one of the Cheeney Family and this was given to her by the family member at some point in her years of working for the family.
Dear Richard,
Thank you so much for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Your tapestry is machine woven out of what appears to be silk and would be considered to be in good condition. It depicts an 18th pastoral scene in a monochromatic color pallet that was popular in the mid 20th century. Through the course of my research, I was not apple to determine if the piece was made by Cheney Brothers. The only examples of textiles from the mill that I could find depicted stylized Art Nouveau florals which were mainly used to make dresses. Based on recent price realizations fair market value would be between 50 and 250 US dollars.
Thanks
Morgan
