I inherited the desk from my mother who was born in 1907 and I believe it had been in her family for some time before that – so at very least it must be late nineteenth century. I have a vague recollection that it was of American origin, but I am not at all sure about that.

Dear John,
Thank you for your request. The presented object is a writing desk with the measurements of 107 x 80 x 52 cm. The bureau has two broad drawers, a foldable writing plate, and shelves in the upper part to store letters and writing equipment. It has a veneer made out of mahogany and is also decorated with transfer print images of couples of children. The stylistic features are a hint that this piece was made in the last third of the 19th century more probably in Great Britain than in America.
Of course, this piece has some traces of the decades it exists and many little damages are visible.
An estimation would be between 800 to 1600 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
