This painting is 3 and a half pounds. 2 feet and a quarter inches long . 18 inches wide and 3 quarter inches deep. two little tears one one each lower left and right corners. It was in an attic for years. Don't know the date but we think it is from the " New France " era Weymouth Nova Scotia.late 1800's. The book " Electric city " talks about the people who came over from france and built the town. They were very rich. The book has pictures in it and a couple of the ladys in it look alot like the one's in the paintings. The theory is the man , who is greyed out in the back was possibly their brother who was killed in the war. It's very interesting....I know it is lest 100 years old.The painting is dusty and such I don't know how to clean it. So I am going to leave it like it is.
It was given to me
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be an early 20th century painting, depicting two women of the Belle Epoche era and a soldier in the background. Your interpretation of the painting has some logic to it, it might very well be a painting of the first World War era. The artist might have been a talented amateur artist or someone who was trained to paint billboards. The range of colours is limited and the stretcher is DIY, but apparently the maker knew how a stretcher looks like. I don´t think it will be possible to identify the artist. The estimate is based on similar provincial paintings offered or sold at auction.
