This painting was given to me by a neighbor who had a large art collection. It was purchased in New York decades ago. It has written on the back: ‘For my parents. Drawn April 1942. Pastel crayons. For a wedding anniversary present. After still life by Peale.’ On the frame, it says: ‘Frame New Hampshire 1885’. The inscription on the back of the painting indicates that it was created in April 1942 as a wedding anniversary gift for the artist’s parents. It was made using pastel crayons and is based on a still life by an artist with the last name Peale. The Peale family is well known in the history of American art for their contributions to the still life genre. There are also two symbols visible — one appears to be from a company, like a round stamp or seal, and the second seems to have been drawn by hand. It looks like two overlapping letters: one is a ‘W’ and the other is a sideways ‘D’, forming a half-circle. That’s all the information I have. I’d love to learn more about it — its value, history, or any other details you can provide. Thank you!
