The appraised works are a group of four silver print photographs executed by French photographer Marc Riboud (1923-2016). Riboud was regarded for capturing politically motivated imagery, particularly moments during the Cultural Revolution in China, the Vietnam War and American protests in the 1960s. Having fought in the French Resistance during WWII, the artist maintained a staunch anti-war sentiment, which is evident in his photographs. Riboud was born Saint-Genis-Laval and studied engineering at the École Centrale de Lyon before taking up photography. He soon became associated with Magnum Photos, alongside Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa and went on to become the organization’s president.
The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. The artist’s photographs regularly come up for sale at houses in the US and abroad. Overall, recent results appear inconsistent, with many photographs failing to find buyers while others achieve realized prices within or above their high presale estimates. The appraised works’ size, subject, condition (based on images provided) as well as the artist’s current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
Please note: the estimate provided is for each photograph rather than for the group combined. Given the comparable size amongst the 4 photographs, they are estimated in the same range based on auction comparables.
