Mask in 11 inch diameter round with brass inlayed around the eye slits and over the bridge of the nose. There are tiny beads inset in the surface in a pattern around the face of the mask. The surface is cracking in some places. I think it is a dried mud over the wood base.
11 inches round, about 4 inches deep.
Hello,
This mask appears to be a handcrafted piece of African tribal art, likely inspired by the traditional masks of the Congo, Gabon, or Nigeria, where beadwork and metal inlays are common decorative elements. African masks hold a significant cultural and spiritual meaning, often used in rituals, celebrations, and ceremonies.
The intricate use of beads and brass suggests a decorative or ceremonial function rather than a purely utilitarian mask. The craftsmanship is indicative of mid-to-late 20th-century production, potentially influenced by earlier traditions.
