Ancient Egyptian Jug This is another piece from my adoptive archaeologist grandfather. This little jug Is sealed and there is something inside of it that shakes. The bottom of this piece is also turning into quartz crystal. I assume this piece is also made of clay from the river Nile.
It is approximately 5 inches tall and approximately 4 inches wide
Dear Kim,
Thank you for choosing Mearto for your online appraisal.
Based on the images and available information, this item is:
It seems to be a wheel-made jug with basket handles that are made of marl clay, covered with a pale coating, burnished, and decorated in red and black paint. The shape of the jug and the contrast between the light-colored surface and the darker ladderlike designs dividing the vessel body into segments recall Cypriot White Pendant Line juglets that were imported into Egypt a generation or two earlier, at the end of the Second Intermediate Period. The Egyptian potters of early Dynasty 18 adapted both the shape and the style of red and black decoration which they also used on typically Egyptian pottery forms.
