Hemp canvas painting of Francis Duquesnoy by Anthony Van Dyke. I have reason to believe it is from the early 17th century and possibly the original.
Unknown and unidentifiable before I owned it. I discovered it was a painting by Anthony Van Dyke after owning it for 7 years. I purchased it as an unknown painting from the 17th century.
Dear Adam,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a mid-sized painting made in oil paint on canvas with unknown measurements. This painting depicts a man wearing a costume of a member of the upper-class holding fragment of a sculpture of a faun. This sculpture probably made in the Roman period identifies this man as a sculptor and connoisseur of the art of the ancient world. This painting is a later copy after the famous painting by Anthony van Dyck depicting the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy who lived and worked a long time of his life in Rome. This copy was made in the late 19th or early 20th century.
This piece is in bad to medium condition and there is serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 250 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
