An uncle from Germany
This is a mid 19th century roll front, or cylinder, front bureau desk done in the Biedermeier manner and likely produced in Southern Germany. Technically this is not a secretaire, as it does not have the cabinet/bookshelf atop the desk. The desk is veneered with either satinwood or tulipwood. There are silhouette profiles of a man and woman at the front of each cabinet/drawer; likely the original owners for whom the piece was made as well as an image with a pegasus, book and quill pen and the Latin verse, nulla dies sine linea which means 'no day without a line'. The estimate is based on actual past auction sales of comparables.
