Roland Detre. Approx. 12" x 14". It appears to be painted with pastels/crayons. It is a scene of sailboats/rowboats clustered in a bay. Lots of black, brown, aqua blue, and some orange/red/yellow. You can see pencil markings throughout the piece. I researched the signature online - it looks very similar to his other works and is in the lower right corner. It does NOT appear to be any kind of copy or reproduction. I inherited it from my parents. Date of production is uncertain (perhaps early 20th century). It's in it's original frame: glass, a simple 1/2" black wood frame and a 2" border of camel-colored matting around the painting. The brown paper has been removed from the back of the frame. Underneath is a cardboard inlay held in place by about 20 brads. The brads seem to have been placed by a professional; they're evenly spaced and are holding the cardboard in place firmly (and the brads are slightly rusted). A wire was connected with screws for hanging.
Sorry, I have no idea. It's possible that my father inherited it from his father, who was born in approx. 1900.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a pastel on paper by Roland DETRE (1903-2001), most likely depicting a harbour in a somewhat abstract manner, possibly dating to the early 1950s. The hungarian-american artist lived in several places in Europe and later moved to the USA. One of his paintings is in the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art Collection. The estimate is based on the few auction results of paintings or drawings actually sold at auction. If offered in a well advertised auction the result might be higher than the high estimate.
