Etched Glass Platter
24 February 2020
Description

Reverse etched glass platter. Oval, 15.5" x 11". 1.5" deep. Design includes birds, mountains, wildlife and a large sailboat. Know it was from my Great great Aunt - probably from the early 1900s. Scratch on the face (shown in photograph). No chips or cracks. Interesting "flaw" of what looks like cloth in the glass. Several bubbles from production. Marked C C co in sailboat.

Provenance

Believe it was a wedding present for my Great Great Aunt and Uncle in the early 1900s. No other information known.

What does this mean?

Good morning, Sandi,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

This is very similar to lots of oval platters made by the Crystal Glass Co (I wonder if the C C Co at one time said C G Co?) in a variety of patterns and is what in the business is known as EAPG (Early American Pattern Glass) which was very popular in the late 19th Century. Firing occlusions are common, normal and do not discount the value. It is often difficult to identify the exact pattern, or decorative imagery, which in this platter is really quite wonderful. Unfortunately, these rarely bring more than a couple hundred dollars at auction.

Based on the photographs and information provided, this is:

An antique Early American Pattern Glass etched or satin-frosted oval platter
Attributed to the Crystal Glass Co, Pittsburgh, PA, fourth quarter 19th Century (1875-1900
unidentified pattern
15 1/2 by 11 inches; 1 1/2 inches deep
CONDITION: not examined in person; client represents this appears to have normal firing occlusions and bubbles.
PROVENANCE: descended in the client's family for more than 100 years
$150-250*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
