Fang mask from Gabon
Late 19th/early 20th century. Collected in the 1930s. A special mask from the Fang. From the same hand as the example listed in the most prominent book on the culture: Fang: Visions of Africa, by Louis Perrois (plate 43). This mask is an archetype representing the precursor to modern art. The lines on the mask are akin to the famous sophisticated line drawings of Henri Matisse. The entire face is created from the tip of the nose to the pointed chin with a single line on either side. The mask is in good condition

A beautiful Ngil Mask from Gabon, late 19th century. The Ngil mask originated from an agrarian/hunting group known as the Fang people, located in the countries of Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon.
African Mask from the Fang Tribe of Gabon were worn worn by spiritual leaders during rituals to ward off evil spirits, or as symbols depicting wealth and prosperity.
