Back of fan has many signatures. Measures approximately 19 1/2 L and 7 1/2 width opened.
Family owned, not sure of origin. Rumor has it it was a gift at a Chinese wedding and all the guests signed it. Very old looking.
Hello again Dee,
Thank you for your appraisal inquiries with Mearto. Again, I apologize for the delay in your appraisal, and thank you for your patience. The item presented appears to be a hand-painted folding fan depicting a Chinese genre scene. The scene appears to be signed and appears to possibly read, "Mitsumatsu." However, the second character is unclear and I may be incorrect. I am unaware of a Chinese wedding tradition of signing the fan. However, there is a known tradition of a bride throwing the fan to cast off bad luck. The fan also does not appear to be a typical wedding fan. The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable Chinese hand-painted fans, dating to the early 20th century and the late 19th century. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
