I met and got to know Jim Marshall a bit in 1996-97 while managing The Whiskey bar inside the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood, CA. Jim would visit every time he was in town and hang out with me while I was working. He was kind enough to give this to me.
The appraised work is a silver gelatin print photograph by American artist Jim Marshall (1936-2010). The image depicts guitarist Keith Richards sitting in a chair, strumming a guitar with a cigarette dangling in his mouth, shot during The Stones historic 1972 tour. Marshall was a well-known rock and roll photographer, who captured the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Who and Ray Charles among others. He was born in Chicago but grew up in San Francisco. He was eventually hired by Atlantic and Columbia records to shoot artists at work and in the studio. The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. The appraised work's size, composition, medium and condition (based on images provided), as well as the artist's current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
