Liberty is an original, one-of-one large-scale metal sculpture created in 2026 by artist Joe Menna of Scrap Reforged. The sculpture depicts an American bald eagle with raised wings and was individually designed, engineered, fabricated, welded and finished by the artist. Fully assembled, Liberty measures approximately 46 inches wide × 34 inches deep × 102 inches tall and weighs 272 pounds. The sculpture is built around a substantial internal structural framework fabricated from 5/8-inch steel rebar, which was formed and welded to establish the eagle’s shape and structural support. The body was then skinned with 16-gauge sheet steel before the exterior sculptural elements were individually fitted and incorporated into the finished work. Liberty is constructed from an extensive combination of reclaimed, repurposed and fabricated metal components, including steel, stainless steel, solid brass, silicon bronze, wrenches, knives, motorcycle and automotive components, gears, sprockets, roller chain, camshafts, connecting rods and other mechanical elements. Individual components were selected and modified by the artist to function as feathers, anatomical forms, structural elements and visual details rather than simply being attached as found objects. Prominent handcrafted details include a hand-shaped and mirror-polished solid brass beak, individually formed and arranged metal feather elements, sculpted and textured silicon-bronze feet, and numerous polished, ground, heat-treated and hand-finished metal surfaces. Wrenches are used extensively throughout the sculpture as intentional visual and anatomical elements. The eagle is mounted on a custom-fabricated sculptural pedestal incorporating heavy industrial chain, sprockets and a suspended Liberty Bell element. The pedestal was designed and fabricated as an integral part of the artwork rather than as a separate display stand. The pedestal incorporates a powered rotating mechanism that allows the completed sculpture to rotate for 360-degree viewing, revealing different mechanical, sculptural and polished details as the artwork turns. Despite its size and weight, Liberty was engineered to disassemble into four major components for transportation and exhibition. The pedestal weighs 124 pounds, the central eagle sculpture weighs 82 pounds, and each of the two removable wings weighs 33 pounds, for a combined assembled weight of 272 pounds. The completed sculpture represents approximately 400+ hours of individual design, fabrication, welding, metal finishing, assembly and engineering by the artist. Every major element of Liberty was individually selected, altered, fabricated, welded, fitted and finished by the artist. Liberty is a unique original artwork; no editions or reproductions exist.
