Mahogany pedestal Dining table with sideboards 19th century Caribbean
29 November 2019
Description

.The table is in perfect condition, the lustre of the mahogany quite unique. I had it restored by a specialist when I imported to France in 1998. A bit dusty on the photographs. This table is built from Jamaican mahogany for the pedestal and Cuban mahogany for the tabletop. It was originally crafted in the early 1800’s to furnish the King’s House in Spanish Town, Jamaica. The central part tilts into vertical position. Two sideboards fit onto the end of the square table to increase the size to seat 12. The table remained in the King’s House for some time, and was sold because it was too small. My grandparent’s bought it sometime around mid 1920’s to furnish their house in Kingston. I inherited it at their demise in 1998, and brought it to France. From what I understand, there is historical value as well as a material value, as Jamaica was a British Colony at the time, and the King’s House served as residence for the Governor. It is very possible that the table features in engravings. The central table measures approximately 150 x 150 cm, and the sideboards 60 x 150 cm . When added on to the end they increase the overall size to 270 x 150 cm.

What does this mean?

Good afternoon, Dominique,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
What a beautiful table - the grain on that mahogany is really wonderful. If you can give me the height of the table, I will amend that in; it does not alter the value of the table.
Tables made in Bermuda, Jamaica and some of the other West Indies island etc do not come to auction very often so it is difficult to find comparable examples at auction.
That said, pedestal tables are not bringing very much money at the moment - $1,000/1,500 is about typical for these but with the added provenance (assuming it can be proven) and the beautiful wood, it is more appropriately valued at $3,000-5,000, which would be a fair market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.

Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A Regency or George IV mahogany triple pedestal dining table
By repute, made in Spanish Town, Jamaica, for the King's House
circa 1825
size extended 270 x 150 cm.
$3,000-5,000
