What does this mean?

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be what you suggested, a 1956 lithograph by Marc Chagall ( 1887-1985), known as "Elijah au Ciel " or "Elijah being taken to Heaven in Chariot of Fire", approx 10 x 15 1/2 inches or 40 x 26.5 cm, numbered 3/75, bearing a pencil signature lower right "Marc Chagall" which actually should read "Chagall" only. This might be a page from "Verve" with the lithograph "prophet Daniel with the lion" ( MOURLOT 142) on the backside, bearing a fake signature. The original would be on "Arches" paper.
This is very likely an authentic lithograph of an open edition, later altered to appear to be of the signed and numbered edition. Such a forged print would have no value. I will pass this on to authenticaton for a closer look.

This is a conditional appraisal, which means that we have not verified the authenticity of this item. Click here to learn more about the authentication resources that Mearto offers.

Hello Klaus,
Thank you for your "Conditional Appraisal"
I did a little research and found several Chagall images from the "Biblical Series" which are signed Marc Chagall. Unfortunately, I am unable to upload the images to you. I can send them via email. If you would like me to do that please send me your email address.
Klaus, were you able to verify the new copy of the signature on the Meiji Bronze Eagle you appraised for me???
I would like to consign the 6 items I have submitted for appraisal.
Sincerely,
Audrey Eller

It would help to see the backside of the print and the "ARCHES" watermark.

Hello Klaus,
Please let me know the result of your authentication of the authentication of the signature on the Meiji Bronze Eagle.
Also, do you have the authentication confirmed on Marc Chagall "The Phrophet with Chariot"
Ms Howell did the appraisal on Marc Chagall " The Prophet" would the authenticity also need to be verified as well.
Thank you,
Audrey Eller

Hi Audrey,
Did you find out your lithograph legit?
I have the same one 62/75 Marc Chagall signed lithograph. Not signed Chagall only. Please let me know whether it is legit or forged.

Sorry, no I have not found out if it is genuine.

I spent a couple of decades at The Met in NY. the appraiser is correct. What you have is either a genuine lithograph with a fake number and signature (if there is another image on the reverse) or a total fraud if the back has anything but the Arches mark. Unfortunately I've seen a few of these and always with the same COA from a framing shop in California that went out of business 40 years ago.
