This is a family heirloom. I’ve been told it’s a Gilbert Stuart however I’m not able to discern a signature
To my knowledge it has always been in the family
Dear Lori,
Thank you for choosing Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The appraised item appears to be after the American portraitist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) and is a portrait miniature of Hugh Henry Brackenridge. This is probably a watercolor on ivory, gilt surround.
A similar miniature was sold last year in America and for your information, the estimate highlighted in red above is based on comparables offered and sold at auction in the last five years. The subject work’s size, the quality of the work, condition (based on photographs provided), as well as the artist’s current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate.
Please note that this valuation has been provided on the condition of authenticity, which may need to be confirmed with additional research. For more information, please visit www.mearto.com/authenticate.
Best regards,
Karine
