Painting is of an older European man with a red vest on and a black hat with feather on one side. The actual painting is about 12cm x 16cm and is signed in the upper left hand corner by O. Schmitt. It looks as if the painting was done on wood. Many pencil marking (numbers) in various locations on the reverse side along with my grandmother's name Gunhild Cedergren from Ronninge, Sweden. Gunhild is a descendent from a famous Swedish painter per Vilhelm Cedergren.
Acquired from my grandmother in Sweden.
Dear Stephan,
Thank you for the request. The presented object is a painting made in oil color on board with the measurements of 16 x 12 cm. It depicts an older person with a hat and a red vest. This person could be identified with a wine-grower or a cellarer who had the supervision over the wine cellar of a court or monastery. The signature could be identified with the German artist Oskar SCHMITT (1882-1943) who mainly painted genre scenes and humoristic portraits like this.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
