Porcelain/bisque doll
29 October 2022
Description

I was gifted a doll in 1978, the gift card indicated it’s current clothing had been made in 1937 by the giver’s grandmother, and had been owned by other families before that. It is all porcelain/bisque with moveable arms and legs. The box it was presented in says made in Japan, but I am unsure that the box is related to the doll at all.

What does this mean?

Hello Jennifer ,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, overall pattern, porcelain quality and the colours, I concluded that this is an Entirely Hand Painted likely German Porcelain Bisquit Doll. The piece dates back to the period from 1910 to 1930. Likely circa 1920. The piece can be categorised as an antique. Overall, the item appears to be in style of the Simon & Halbig dolls at the time, which was a popular brand. The piece's clothes are somewhat coherent to it's production period, this means the suggestion on the gift card about the clothes being made in 1937 is possible, likely true. The piece is wearing a dress with needle work alterations, light blue and white. The piece is accompanied by a wood lacquer box and a gidt letter belonging to it from 1978. The box is not related to the piece but the piece was preserved in the box for a considerable time, made in Japan. The piece is also wearing red pair of shoes. We can see serial numbers and a plus sign on the back of the piece's neck, (61/8?). Arms and legs of the piece are jointed. Small sized. The piece appears to be in good condition with signs of use and age on it.

Entirely hand painted.

Dimensions: 8 Inches Tall

Condition: The piece appears to be in good condition with signs of use and age on it.

Provenance: Was gifted to the current owner in 1978, previously owned by the giver's family and giver's grandmother likely made the current clothing of the piece.

100-120$.
