Hi Brian,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Slipper chairs are denoted by their low-to-the-ground seat, which is wide. While most often featured without arms (to accommodate wide skirts), they did come with arms and this is a nice example, possibly from Louisiana based on similarities to other chairs from that area.
The market for these chairs is, unfortunately, quite soft at the moment and other chairs of similar form and age have been selling at auction for only about $300-500 or less.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Renaissance Revival carved walnut slipper armchair
unattributed maker, possibly Louisiana, second half 19th Century
Centering a boldly carved crest set into deep back with inset green velvet upholstery, down-curving arms with scrolled terminals, the broad seat with rounded front edge and partially over-the-rail upholstered with brass tack trim.
44-1/2 inches high, 27 inches wide, 29 inches deep
CONDITION: This chair appears to be in generally good condition given age and wear. Client notes it has been reupholstered.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$300-500*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
