Oil painting on board. Purchased at Zantman Art Gallery Carmel ca 1970’ s. 7”z 9 1/2” A Tadema
Zantmans. Art Gallery
Dear Janet,
Thank you for your request. This is an oil painting on board with the measurements of 7 x 9,5 inches. The painting depicts a typical Dutch landscape with a couple walking along a river or canal. In the background of the landscape, we see also a windmill and a castle. In the right corner, we see a signature "A. Tadema". The painter of this painting was not a professional painter as we can see in the perspective and in the details of the figures. It was made in the 20th century.
An estimation would be between 30 to 100 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
Dear Janet,
painting on wood is common during the medieval ages and partly in the Renaissance. In the late 19th century reusing this technique is a reference to the old masters. Also, many paintings on wood made out of cigar boxes appear.
With best regards,
Georg
Interesting! Thanks, Georg.
You are very welcome!
Thanks, Georg. It is unusual that Zantmans would have a reproduction of any sort. But I didn’t think it could be an Alma Tadema, especially given the price paid. Can you tell why paintings are painted on wood boards, such as this one. Thank you.
